tales from italian haute couture: princesses, frocks and la dolce vita (NEw date!)

March 10, 2021.Reading time 5 minutes.

Join me for a talk about Italian haute couture, Rome and la dolce vita. It’s a star-studded journey through the world of aristocrats and film stars as we go back to the middle of the twentieth century, the time when Rome was known as Hollywood on the Tiber and the city’s film studios Cinecittà welcomed […]

The season begins. Almost. Didn’t stay out for long as it’s so cold at the moment, but still nice to look forward to warmer evenings. Been craving a bag of chips in newspaper with bits and salt and vinegar all day. UK nostalgia is at its highest along with 90s house music on my stereo as that’s the last time I lived there.
It’s a hard life by Felix
There are those days when I feel like I spend the whole day cooking (and no one particularly appreciates it, don’t we all??) and then tonight I just gave up, cooked a big pan of Arborio rice, riso in bianco or white/plain rice as opposed to risotto or anything. Plonked it on the table (and that’s your lot.) Devoured with Grana Padano, olive oil, butter, pecorino and Asiago cheese, pic n mix style.

Cappuccino, brioche, morning papers, joy, as today Lombardy moved back into an orange zone from a red zone along with most of Italy and along with many other kids across the country, my own kids went back to school. (Kids up to first year middle school went back last Wednesday. Today it was the turn of the rest of the middle schoolers and the high schools who are operating on 50%-75% in school and the rest online, and then they swap over.) So wonderful this morning to drop them off at school and see them go join their friends, and equally wonderful to come back home and breathe in the knowledge that the kids are back in school which is exactly where they should be. Was reminded this morning of last February when I went to collect their things from school after they’d closed the schools and it felt very much like we were all going off into a great unknown. Over a year later and life hasn’t gone back to normal, but felt so proud of my kids this morning as they got up, got everything sorted for school and tests and all the things that go with it, picked up their masks before they left the house and went off once more.
Congratulations to my lovely friend @daisylou79 who is celebrating her publication day today! It’s all about how to understand and deal with your child’s emotional ups and downs and create calm within your family, including straightforward tips, how to deal with anger and help them manage their feelings. All feels especially relevant at the moment. Just ordered my copy and can’t wait to start reading!
So apart from trying to fathom out my child’s online schooling timetable, which would be a challenge for organised souls (of which I am not one), I have this on my office bed this morning. Poetry is my guilty secret, although I never do actually feel guilty about it and love this book all the more as it tells you to write more poetry and above all read more poetry. The first writing prompt is “Everything is going to be amazing.” Is there anything more inspiring than that?
